For those interested in solids and surfaces, I found two good papers by Roald Hoffmann.
In How chemistry and physics meet in the solid state Hoffmann introduces the language and ideas of solid-state physics in a form that is easy to understand for a chemist.
A good follow up article is A chemical and theoretical way to look at bonding on surfaces, in which the focus is on the interaction of a molecule with a surface.
These are two gems. Enjoy them.
